Which pig breeds represented the ideal forms of nineteenth-century animal husbandry?

Original antique black-and-white zoological and agricultural plate titled “Schweine.” from Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, 4th edition, Bibliographisches Institut, Leipzig. The plate belongs to Volume 14, published in 1889, and accompanies the encyclopedia article on pigs.

Four detailed illustrations depict historic domestic pig breeds: Berkshire pig, Japanese Masked pig, Small White Yorkshire pig and Hampshire pig. Each breed is shown in a carefully observed farm setting, preserving a distinctive late nineteenth-century record of livestock breeding and agricultural zoology.

The illustrations bear the signature of animal artist G. Mützel, with engraving/xylographic credit R. Illner visible on the plate.

A highly decorative period illustration for collectors of antique zoology, agricultural history, livestock, heritage breeds and Victorian-era animal imagery.

The sheet is in fair to good visible condition for its age. There is pronounced overall age toning, a strong central vertical fold/crease, additional horizontal fold lines, edge wear and small handling creases. The printed illustrations remain detailed, dark and clearly legible.
